Description
GOLF COURSES OF OLD TOM MORRIS, AUTOGRAPHED, NR This 352-page book is the first in-depth study of golf course architecture of the 1800s. The book describes nearly 60 courses designed or altered by Old Tom Morris. Born in 1821 in St. Andrews, Scotland, Tom Morris began his golfing career in the feathery ball era. He was one of the few to witness the transition from this expensive ball to the economical gutty and then to the lively rubber-cored ball at the turn of the century. Old Tom, as he was known to all, was the most influential person in golf in the 1800s. His actions shaped not only the courses but also the game as we know it today. In 1865 he began his significant transformation of the Old Course at St. Andrews - a course many believe simply evolved from nature. Old Tom's work established the classic alternate route strategy employed by many early golf course architects who studied the Old Course around 1900. These men, notably Harry Colt, Donald Ross, and Alister Mackenzie, spread Morris' influence throughout the world.Numerous maps show original and present routings of Old Tom's work. Forty-seven black and white photographs depict Morris' courses both in the 1890s and the 1990s.The book chronicles the life of Old Tom as well as his golf course designs. He helped to establish the British Open championship and won four of them. However he learned how to deal with tragedy as his Open champion son Tommy died at age 25.
